Navi Mumbai has witnessed a remarkable 78% increase in its tree population over the past eight years, as revealed by the recent tree census conducted by ORNET Technologies Pvt Ltd in collaboration with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The comprehensive survey, spanning from December 2023 to May 2024, reported a total of 15,28,779 trees across the city, compared to 8,57,295 recorded in the previous census of 2015.

ORNET Technologies carried out the ₹3-crore project using advanced GIS/GPS technology and manual efforts to ensure accurate data collection and analysis. The data was mapped to satellite imagery of NMMC, enabling a detailed view of the city’s green cover. This innovative approach also led to the development of a web application for tree cutting and pruning activities, along with a portal for managing census data effectively.
The survey found a predominance of indigenous trees, with native species such as kaduneem, bor, amba, and peepal forming a significant part of the tree population. However, it also highlighted the presence of 3,84,842 non-indigenous species, including gul mohar, vilayati babul, and royal palm, emphasizing the need for more native plantations to enhance ecological balance.
NMMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Garden) Dilip Nerkar lauded the efforts, stating, “The report showcases Navi Mumbai’s commitment to preserving and enhancing its green cover. The collaboration with ORNET Technologies has helped integrate nature into urban planning, promoting harmony between humans and the environment.”
Tree activist Aba Ranware acknowledged the progress but urged the city to focus on planting more indigenous species, as they offer greater ecological benefits and support biodiversity. He also stressed the importance of better maintenance to ensure the survival of newly planted trees.
The findings of the census highlight Navi Mumbai’s dedication to sustainable urban development. With the support of ORNET Technologies Pvt Ltd, the city continues to set an example for integrating technology and ecological preservation to create a healthier, greener future.
